Jeffrey Borer, MD

Professor of Medicine, Cell Biology, Radiology and Surgery at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center and College of Medicine in New York City. He is Chairman, Department of Medicine and Chief, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, as well as Director of The Howard Gilman Institute for Heart Valve Disease and of the Cardiovascular Translational Research Institute at SUNY Downstate. Dr. Borer received his BA from Harvard, his M.D. from Cornell and trained at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He spent 7 years in the Cardiology Branch of the NHLBI at the NIH and a year at Guy’s Hospital in London as a Senior Fullbright Hays Scholar, where he completed the first clinical demonstration of the utility of nitroglycerin in acute myocardial infarction (performed enabling animal studies at NIH). Upon returning to the NIH, he developed stress radionuclide cineangiography, for the first time allowing non-invasive assessment of cardiac function with exercise. He then returned to Cornell for 30 years, where he was the Gladys and Roland Harriman Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Pathophysiology. At Cornell, in addition to clinical service and teaching, his primary research involved developing prognostic standards for regurgitant valve diseases and exploring the cellular and molecular biology myocardial dysfunction in valve diseases, now being continued at SUNY Downstate. He has been an Advisor to the USFDA for 33 years, chairing the CardioRenal Advisory Committee for 3 terms (last ended in 2004) and the Cardiovascular Devices Advisory Committee for one (ended 2009). He has been involved in many therapeutics development projects as investigator, consultant, executive committee chair or member, DSMB chair or member, and cardiac event adjudication committee member. He was an Advisor to NASA for 24 years. He has served as President of the American College of Cardiology (ACC), New York State Chapter, and member of the Board of Governors of the national ACC. Currently, he is President of the Heart Valve Society of America and a member of the ISO US Valve Experts Committee. Dr. Borer has published 400 scientific papers and 4 books, edits the journal, Cardiology, and has received several awards and other recognitions, including the Public Service Medal of NASA.
